PRINCESS birdiePrincess Birdie came to Old Dog Heaven on February 23, 2025. She is an 11 year old husky with the sweetest face and a playful soul. She went into the shelter when her family of ten years was no longer able to care for her. She was quite stressed when she came home, but she got the hang of things quickly, learning from the three boys, Dexter, Bandit and Luckie.
Birdie is a bit unique to Old Dog Heaven in that she is a little younger and healthier than most who come to stay. Rocky suddenly died several weeks prior to Ladybird's arrival. Rocky was a helper dog in the home, assisting the other old, sick and traumatized dogs as they came into Old Dog Heaven. I was hoping to find another girl who could be such a calm and peaceful presence in the home. I think we found it! As she adjusts, we are learning that she is super sweet, very playful, and loves every dog she meets. As for Birdie's health, right now it seems solid. The main issue is that she has labored breathing much of the time. She has about 17 pounds of extra weight on her, which is exacerbating the problem. She has already lost a couple pounds, and the exercise she gets is doing wonders for her. We are hoping there are no underlying issues regarding her cardio-pulmonary health. The vet is hopeful that when the weight comes off, she will feel great. We have a new lady in town. We are happy to have her happy little soul at Old Dog Heaven. Welcome, Princess Birdie! ***
It turned out that Birdie's weight loss didn't much help her respiratory issues. But, she lived a happy and healthy life until May 28th, 2026. On that morning, Birdie fell mysteriously and intensely ill. We returned from our usual morning walk and she began to vomit up foam and bile. She then laid down and refused to get up. It turned out that she had a mysterious respiratory infection/illness. Our sweet girl did not respond to treatment. She passed away the next day on May 29th at 8:26 am. We are grief stricken at our loss of her loving spirit. We celebrate her life and all the goodness she brought to our little piece of heaven on earth. Rest in peace, sweet girl. You are missed.
