All of us experience moments in our lives when we cross a threshold into a new chapter. At these times, our hearts instinctively seek the presence of God. Threshold Liturgies are designed to accompany you through these sacred passages. Each liturgy offers a carefully crafted structure of prayer, scripture, reflection, and ritual that can be celebrated in homes, hospitals, parks, or any meaningful place. They invite you and your loved ones to gather and share honestly all that you grieve and fear, all that you hope and dream. God desires to hear you, to comfort you, and to offer the salvation that is promised and faithfully given down through the ages.

If you find these liturgies valuable, please consider making a donation to support this pastoral ministry.

who can lead a liturgy of the word?

Threshold Liturgies are meant to be prayed by everyday people in the midst of everyday life. They may be led by anyone willing to gather others in prayer—a family member, a friend, or any trusted person who can gently guide a group through ritual. The presider’s role is simply to help create a space of reverence, compassion, and attentiveness to God’s presence. In prayer we bring before God all that we experience: our grief and gratitude, our fears and hopes, our questions and longings. We ask for the grace we need to live fully within the life that has been given to us.

celebration of life for an animal companion

A good goodbye can greatly aid in healing. The purpose of this Liturgy of the Word is to celebrate the life of a animal companion that is dying. This liturgy enfolds the procedure of euthanasia (done by a vet) in deep prayer, honoring the gift of the life that has been given, and acknowledging the loss of companionship in your life.

transition from married to unmarried life

When we join in marriage, we participate in a grand ritual of promise and joy. However, many marriages result in divorce and annulment, and we do not enlist the power of ritual to help us move through the profound grief and pain of this time. The purpose of this liturgy is to mark the transition from a married to an unmarried state of life, gently inviting the couple into healing through a loving acceptance of the separation of their life together.

Embrace your prieshood

Through baptism, all lay people participate in the priesthood of Christ, the outpouring of the self in ways that make visible God’s dream of justice, peace, and love for all creation. This common priesthood is lived out by all the baptized in ways that both nourish and are nourished by the ordained priests who commit their lives to serving God’s people in faith.

One way lay people can exercise this priesthood is by praying the Liturgy of the Word. Though often overlooked as a powerful form of prayer in the Catholic tradition, the Liturgy of the Word offers a meaningful way to gather, helping to create the space within our cluttered hearts to consciously receive the goodness that God so deeply desires to give.

While the Liturgy of the Eucharist is reserved to ordained priests, the Liturgy of the Word can be led by any baptized Catholic. Baptism empowers you to exercise your priestly ministry by gathering those around you for meaningful prayer about the realities that shape your life.
